Real simple-
I think that had a lesser man than Lincoln been President - Buchanan in a
second term for example, yes, a good chance the North would let the South
"go in peace".

I think this is an utterly realistic assessment of the 'correlation of
forces' and a great example of why the South was nuts to risk war.
