It's not the Civil War but I very strongly recommend Jonathan Shay's
"Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character". Shay is/was a
psychiatrist working with chronic PTSD Vietnam War veterans and he relates
their experiences with how Homer describes Achilles's actions in "The
Iliad". Fascinating stuff.
