There weren't even dirt roads and no sorts of  bridges across streams and  
rivers.  The columns of troops in  the field in this campaign did not even  
have supply wagons (mules  were used instead) or ambulances.  Those Gatling 
 
guns were the  only wheeled vehicles around.
