As for a skirmish line a concentration of bodies in one spot could mean
anything. For example, a skirmish line could move slowly forward,
occasionally stopping to file a volley or shoot individually. They could
at a
certain spot receive a volley of enemy fire and take casualties.
The standard tactics of the day had skirmishes operating in groups of 4.
As circumstances warranted I suppose these 4 men might spread out more or
group together somewhat.
