One of the best places to help your students understand exactly what that task entailed is at the Schlagle Library at Wyandotte County Lake Park. It is just over the hill from the Missouri River that the Corps of Discovery traveled, and is an official site on the Lewis and Clark trail. Located just a few miles from the Wyandotte County Park Museum, it makes the perfect companion piece on a field trip. The park has plenty of room for youngsters to relax and eat a picnic lunch along the lake or nearby ball fields. Boat rentals for the very adventurous teacher and students are available.
Reservations are a must, and the best slots fill up fast. Contact Education Specialist Jessica Lawrenz to set up your trip.

The library is a modern facility with
technology and resources for many different activities. The nature
trail that winds through the woods and along the lake provides the
perfect setting for students - and teachers -to imagine themselves members
of the Corps of Discovery as it traveled through unknown lands.
The nature trail provides an opportunity for a unique journal experience. Lewis sketched the animals and plants he saw within the written description. Asking your students to do the same in their journals as they tour the trail will give them an opportunity practice this marriage of art and writing. |
The library staff has developed dozens of nature programs K-12 that are aligned to the USD 500 Standards, Benchmarks, and Indicators as well as Kansas Curricular Standards for Science Education.
These lessons are detailed at the LibraryWeb Site along with information on how to make reservations and prepare your students for this experience.
