n
the 17th and 18th century millions of African were forcibly shipped
to the United States where they were sold into slavery. A great number
of these died in the Middle Passage, but a number also survived both the
voyage and slavery. When they finally gained freedom, they were left
for the most part to their own devices to carve a life for themselves outside
of slavery. Many stayed in the South, living near their
place of bondage. However, many moved North in search of "life, liberty
and the pursuit of happiness."
This project asks you and other
students to form and research questions about these migrations that will
lead to spin-off research prompted by the data you gather. You will
use the Historical On-Line
Census Browser on the University of Virginia Library site to trace
where African Americans lived during the period of enslavement and their
subsequent migrations.
