Black Migration to Kansas
By: Yeng Xiong
The migration of African Americans
to Kansas began in the Eastern section of the state. The county with
the most Blacks was Wyandotte. In 1960, Graham County showed the least
Blacks. The first change in population was from 1910 (11,172) to
1920 (16,758) which was a jump of 5,586 people. The second change
was from 1940 (23,017) to 1950 (29,367), showing a total of 6,350 people
in that year. It also showed a difference of 764 people from the
last change. Every other year had a change of about two thousand
people for the Wyandotte County population.
The two greatest changes for Wyandotte
County came in the periods 1910-1920 and 1940-1950. Linn County had
the greatest decrease between the years of 1900 (16,689) to 1910 (14735)
where 1,954 people had either passed way or moved out. Sedgwick County
experienced the greatest increase in 1950- 1960 an increase in population
from 9746- 20469. Wyandotte County showed another great increases in Kansas
migration of Blacks.
Sedgwick County started as a slow-growing
county with only nine Blacks; however, it increased to 20,469 in 1960 with
a gain of 10,723 people in one year (1950- 1960). Wyandotte County
doesn't have the greatest population of Blacks, although it showed a good
increase in that population. Sedgwick County had the greatest increase
of the Black population in Kansas's history.
In conclusion, I think that the
best counties to do a research on would be the eastern counties of Kansas
because that is where most of the Blacks come from and have settled.
For western counties, I suggest Stevens County because I did not see Stevens
County in 1870; nevertheless, it appeared in 1880 and on. It will
be interesting to find out why Stevens was or was not a growing area in
Kansas.
I’d also suggest Davis County
because after 1880, it was cut off. I think it might have been renamed
something else. There were no clues as to why Davis County was not
found on the Kansas map at all.
